An inspector doesn't call before they come, but some places have a type of "buddy system" and will tip off other places if they catch wind that an inspector is coming, or if the inspector has been to see them

I think this is a really great idea, however, being a restaurant owner in a fairly small town, our Health Inspector eats at our establishment on a regular basis. So, we are always on our toes! And we pride ourselves on a very clean kitchen! But I have seen some NASTY one's!

being a former restaurant manager i DO KNOW FOR A FACT that some health inspectors call ahead of time (usually they are paid off to do so!) and the scramble to clean is quite hilarious. kudos to you for taking matters in your own hands. hint: eat in restaurants with a visable open kitchen where you can see the chefs... they take great pride in their work & LUUUUV to be complemented!!

I find this thread interesting. I have worked in restaurants throughout my life even when employed elsewhere (its in my blood I guess.) People who know this of me always say something like, "i bet you have some stories to tell." Actually I dont. I dont know why people ASSUME restaurants are always dirty and are never cleaned unless the health inspector "calls?" (BTW...they DO NOT call in my County.) 99% of the restaurant owner know that if people get sick in their restaurant, they might as well close down!

We own one. Our inspectors NEVER call and warn you. We would recognize that as a prank call. Here in Deschutes County, Oregon, all you have to do is go to the county website and check the last score the restaurant got. Eat ONLY at the ones with the highest scores.
