I worked in food service for almost a year and it caused me to lose faith in humanity. You'd be shocked to know what people do to your food when you are rude!

What we should be doing is finding, and prosecuting, those people who feel it is acceptable to do things to a customer's food just because the person is rude. Rudeness is no excuse for intentionally messing with someone's food. Ever heard of "Assault with a Bodily Fluid?"

I don't hardly ever tip.I too used to be a waitress. If you don't earn it you don't get it!

(cONT from above)Volunteer in the kitchen, if you have to. You learn the ropes, so to speak, and if you do well you will earn a lot of respect from the kitchen, which in turn, gives you some insurance that table 32's Steak will come out cooked properly. Sure that cook may be fired eventually for over cooking steaks, but he can always get another job making 8 bucks an hour. While you make 1000 a week. The thing is, and if you get your shit together, you can make a ton of money. Once you get known and you gain regulars, they will talk. Their friends will talk. You may be asked to work private parties or events. Stranger things have happened to those who are pro-active wait staff. I am trying working on a system that will even the pay scale difference between the wait staff and kitchen, by cross-training. Best of both world. I already do this with my busboys, and they make loot.z

^We can also tell when we have shitty servers. NEVER forget that.

:P Servers are so fake you can't tell anything and that's how they are trained to act! No one who wants to make money off of you approaches a table with an attitude. The attitude is based on how YOU treat them...you are obviously a prick and I feel sorry for the guy or gal who has to serve you. May your food be spat on! GBM :)

^ no it's true that servers have attitudes sometimes. I NEVER have an attitude toward my servers and make their job easy we don't complain or expect anything spectacular, And I have had servers with an attitude come over ask what I wanted to drink and didn't come back I waited 20 minutes..Mind you this was denny's and No it wasn't busy we were the fifth table in there, some people came in after us and they got there drinks right away(diffrent server) as soon as I saw that I left. I was sooo pissed. It was the worst service I ever recieved. I have never been back to dennys since. Mind you I have been in the food service industry since I was 17 I am 28... If you hate your job get a diffrent one. Or fake it til you make it.

You know what they say, 2 wrongs don't make a right but it damn sure makes it even! I believe people should be treated the way they treat others.

This is outstanding! Sounds like we got a lot of foodservice experience here in this forum. I see biased opinions though. Servers who understand this system, Fail. Most do not take the initiative to excel at this noble and ancient trade. Servitude...... There is no more cunning an individual, as the honed profession waiter/waitress. Yeah, I said it! Wait! That is what you do, isn?t it? You wait to meet the needs of patrons, who will, provided they feel you have given a good service, flash you some hush money. I can agree with those of you who say that the fault should be placed upon the Kitchen, in ONE respect. They can do your job: can you do theirs? They know the trivia behind each bite of the sorbet you are enjoying, or the seasonings used in the tartar marinade. I am a chef, but more importantly, I am passionate about food, and the idea of sharing my knowledge. I have cooked, served, bartended, and managed in Restaurants, Banquets, Fine Hotels, Resorts, and so on. Learn how to read people, talk to others in the service, and Learn the food!.

I love the servers who say we can tell who will tip and who won't?! really how? Can you also tell who is a pedophile and who isn't, or how about who is a teacher who isn't? Duhmest excuse ever. How about just do your job well treat ever customers as if they may tip you 1000 dollars because you enjoy your job. If you don't like customer service then don't do the job. I personally hate that excuse because my family doesn't "look" welathy or like we would be ones to leave a generous tip we look like two dollar tippers if anything LOl..hey At least I'm honest...anyway, BUT we are very generous when we get good service, I LOVE to tip a good server to let them know how much I appreciated it. Whats funny is I always watch them when they get the tip too because I leave a lot of $$ which I know they weren't expecting lol..their faces are priceless :D Always Very Pleased

It's not about how well off or poor a person looks that can sometimes tell how they are going to tip. The person that runs you ragged, is rude, and treats you like you are a slave is usually the one that has no appreciation for the server and usually leaves less of a tip- wealthy or not.

When you greet a table, you know if they are going to tip you simply by the way they treat you in the first few minutes. It's not about how you look, it's how you act. Since when did they have servers at BK...? IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO TIP STAY HOME YOU CHEAP ASSHOLES!!!

I also spent ears in food service both in the back of the house

I've worked in the food service for 7 years total in different jobs and people treat you like their slaves. People are just horrible by nature. Only about 20% deserve kindness.

I have NO PROBLEM tipping a GOOD WAIT STAFF PERSON... But a person who acts like they could give a shit less I stiff em!
Remove this stupid comment

Some of us have been in the business long enough to know if you are going to tip or not, that's why you get shitty service! If you don't tip you are causing the server to actually pay to wait on you...totally f***ed up! We pay taxes just like you do! I earn every penny I make and you losers who come in and eat and treat me like I owe you the world make me sick! LEARN HOW TO COOK! 80% of the mistakes are made in the BACK of the house yet, you stiff ME because your food was messed up...LAME! I ALWAYS read an order back to the guest! You want your drink refilled every 5 minutes, I have 8 others tables to look after too, you are not the only person I am waiting on so be a little patient! Don't let your kids play with the salt, pepper and sugar packets...I have to refill those EVERY NIGHT. I make $3.00 an hour...give me a damn break!!!

Why should the BOH's ignorance of food preparation and inability to properly read a ticket reflect on a server? You obviously have never worked in food service and have no idea how much BOH hates FOH. You can complain all you want to a cook, they'll just mess up your food even more the next time! Oh, and don't bother going to a manager, you'll just get fired because a service person is much easier to replace than a cook! 8 tables is normal depending on the size of the dining area and it has nothing to do with what the server wants. They go by charts and how many people are on the floor. I don't think the OP was talking about having to fill the shakers, I think it was about how parents let their children act wild when they are eating out. Granted, this person did agree to work for such a low wage but, do they deserve to be treated like shit for it? I think not. Have some class and show a little respect for your fellow man. Everyone has the right to b**** about their job! I was a server for 7 years and have been managing for 4, I have so much sympathy for the wait staff because of idiots like yourself.
