I was sober in AA and NA for 13 years, alcoholism and drug addiction are a disease. These two groups ARE most certainly cults of the highest order. Some cults are not so bad but still a cult, repeat after me and memorize this and repeat repeat repeat.

It is a cult but it does help some. Most members rely too heavily on sex with one another and the constant "meatings" pun intended. Not to metion the cigs and coffee. The book does not push the meetings as a lifestyle, its the steps, work the steps and

^....step 4 in particular. I was sober for over a decade and have now been drinking for 17 years, no DUI or serious trouble. Abusing alcohol/ drugs are only symptoms.

"AA" is NOT a cult, and alcoholism IS a disease.

Wow-I've always known that the religious "right" is its own kind of messed up disease (and its own kind of addiction), but you just proved it to me once again. And by the way, it's ACCORD, not accore. So not only are you an idiot, but....well, you're an idiot in 1000 different ways.

AA saved my life!! Ask my children, ask my dear friends.. ask my wonderful man in my life. We all are always grateful and some religious idiot is not convincing us otherwise. 5 years and counting one day at a time. My life is enriched and the promises keep coming. Live and Let Live.. You should be GRATEFUL for the good it has done for your loved one and shut up right there. You swill in your misery and you need to clean up the hate and mess in YOUR OWN back yard, I pray for YOU !

OP again, see this is why I see AA as a cult. After years of dealing with my drunk family members, trying to get them to help themselves and heal, they find AA and suddenly us "normies" are the enemies. If we aren't all about their programs then we lose them anyway. That is what cults do, seperate families based on extreme "belief systems". There are no alchy's and normies. The truth is that alcoholism is not a disease. It is a choice. You choose to be drunk. You choose to escape from your problems. You choose to pretend to be a victiom and say you have a disease so that you do not have to own all of the hurt you have caused your friends and families. And we are supposed to be greatful? That is about as lame as anything you ever said while you were still drunk.

Actually I don't lack forgiveness. I always forgive these people who continnue to be selfish and weak. But I am not forgetting what they do so that I can be shit on again. There is a difference.

Cast that first stone dude... kiss the mirror .. you think you are so perfect. There is no wrong or right here.
Remove this stupid comment

Now THAT"S APPRECIATION FOR YA!! Sober.. yet it still isnt good enough... WHAT A FUCKER!!!
Remove this stupid comment

It's not about perfection... that is what the alcoholic tells themself so that they can excuse themselves from just not being a responsible person - "nobody is perfect!" And excuse me... appreciation for being sober? God that is sooo f***ed up! Being sober is a given for most of us and we should be grateful for your sobriety, that you are no longer a drunk a** ****, just an a** **** now? Yep, typical selfish alcoholic...

^Want what you have... uh no. I would much rather have a life where I take responsibility for myself and not be a victim to a pretend disease so I can continue to be a selfish, self absorbed, manipulative liar. This is not hate, really it is love because if I hated you I would be indifferent to the suffering you cause yourself and your family by coninuing in this lie. Seriously, read the links above and then pray for yourself. Pray you have the strength to see that you are the ignorant one, the close minded one, the one who belongs to a cult in order to stay sober while the rest of us manage to do so because we know that being drunk and escaping life is wrong.

2^ i was wrong... you must be a Mormon.
Remove this stupid comment

Nope, not a Mormon... Mormonism is just another cult. I think it's funny that you would say that though...

Waste of time arguing. Everybody has a right to an opinion. That is all it is.. opinions. Like a pissing match.. who can piss the highest on the outhouse wall wins!! I just climb on the roof and hang my ass over :) AA ROCKS!!!

^If you broke your leg in three places, would you want a doctor to shoot you full of morphine, or tell you, "Aw, you can deal with it! Use you inner courage and strength!"?
Remove this stupid comment

^ duh there is a difference between getting morphine to have your bones reset one time and choosing to be a constant drunk to escape your life.

^How do you feel about potheads who suffer from cancer?
Remove this stupid comment

^ I don't have any issues with people who suffer from cancer. I do have an issue with mj being used to deal with the symptoms of cancer as much as I do have a problem with pharm drugs to treat cancer. Most cancers can be healed by removing toxins from the body and healing mental emotional issues. But most people would rather choose to be a victim of cancer and stay high than deal with why they got cancer in the first place.

Live and let live. CULT DEFINITION? noun: a system of religious beliefs and rituals ("Devoted to the cultus of the Blessed Virgin")? noun: adherents of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices? noun: an interest followed with exaggerated zeal"sigh, I guess everything is a cult with religion in it... Look it up. AA is suggestive only, if you want what we have and are willing to go to any lengths to get it..you are ready to take certain steps. It is not advertised, is not on billboards.. quietly it is there for those who Want What We Have!! AND.. KISS.. Keep it simple stupid. Now there is an idea. Who cares if it keeps you sober!!! Oh, and normies are those who have no clue.. it isnt their fault, they are not the enemy, just ignorant and close minded and dont have the genetic make up that makes one prone to addiction. Proven!! Yep, a prayer for you is in order op. Such hate!! Why!

Why don't you read their story, the Big Book? Are you afraid? It is an interesting read.
Remove this stupid comment

OP here. I hae read the big book as well as this http://orange-papers.org/ as well as having dealt with other family members in AA for over 3 decades. Not afraid of anything. I think most people in AA are afraid of owning their choices of escapism and destruction of their lives and that is why they are in AA.

^Do you have a better solution? If not, then STFU.
Remove this stupid comment

If AA is so damned bad, why did a court of law see fit to force me to attend their meetings (and have proof of my attendance) after my DWI conviction? Can I sue the courts for making me attend a cult gathering?
Remove this stupid comment

2^ yeah actually I do have a better solution. It is making a choice to stop being so goddam selfsish and running away from your porblems. Making a choice to have some courage to face and deal with pain. Also a better solution instead to claiming to be a victim of a disease is to be responsible and own the shit you put people through. The reason the courts force you to attend is because it costs them nothing to do so and because they know that even though it may get you sober it will also break your will much like accepted religions do. Let's hope some day you can sue. I would like to see this program to be seen as the cult it is.
Remove this stupid comment

^ right, symptoms... but not of a disease but more of an unwillingness to fully face your pain and fear with courage and strength.
