Good for you! This exact same thing happened to me, and I did end up losing some good friends, because they couldn't deal with me no longer being a doormat, and my new found assertiveness. Oh well. You'll find new friends, and in the end, have much healthier relationships. Keep going, and congratulations on your new attitude. :)
