Just because they have had bad relationships in the past doesn't mean that you aren't an assh*le too. If you expect someone to "be happy" for you and not allow them their own genuine feelings, then you are definately an assh*le.

It's not Linda and it's not Peggy. He's told me that I'm everything that he's ever wanted in a woman. He's given me a glimpse into his life that he's never given anyone else. So many women have screwed him over that he's afraid to just let go and let me love him for fear that I'll do the same. I give my all and let him be himself at all times, he just has stretches where his actions and sometimes words push me away.
