I'm a vet, this is actually pretty common. It does not take all night either, the last one we dealt with was left alone for only 10 minutes for bathroom break, the owner came to the door to let her back in and the dog was already dead, same as yours. Another guy had a dog on a tether line in his back yard. The dog jumped over the fence but the line was too short to let him reach the ground on the other side, so he was hung by his collar. Not your fault... just bad luck.

if you had known the this would happen would you have left him out probaly not. i stayed up late at exs house she had new kitten and new toy elastic with ball on end tied to table. (TV on) heard faint little meow this is what four legged one tailed animals do they play shit happens so I unraveled him let it go.

I left my puppy out on the leash one day and she almost died because she got bit up by ants. I rushed her to a vet and payed almost $1000 to keep her alive. She now belongs to my sister because I know she'll take good care of her. I felt so guilty. =/
