People I know who have worked graveyard for years make it work by sleeping 3-4 hours at a time, twice a day. Usually something like work 11p-8a, then sleep from 11-2 and from 5-9. That way you get the early morning sun and some good afternoon sun, too.

The midnight shift sure beats the 4 to 12 shift. I hate night shift work though. Hopefully you can get another job with better hours.

I worked swing shift for 20 years. On mids, I would go to bed immediately after getting home and sleep sometimes until 4:00. I thought I was doing ok, but 3 months after losing my job, I realized what a zombie I was. I hope I never have to do that again.

Waking up to the sound of your neighbors mowing grass or leaf blowing is the worst.

I used to work graveyard for years and years. I get off work at 7:30 AM. I'd stay awake until maybe 2 PM, do my chores, etc. Go to sleep, wake at 9 PM or so, eat, get ready for work. Sometimes 7 days a week for months at a time. My windows were tin foiled to keep out the light. My wife at the time was screwing the next door neighbor.

Some of us will work no other shift - It's right and natural to us. Above poster is right - stay awake mornings, run errands, get light and air. It's a special breed that works graveyard.
