I don't have social anxiety disorder, or maybe. I am painfully shy and totally agree that alcohol does a great job of making me socialize.

You may think you cover it well, but you may be fooling yourself. You also may be an alcoholic.

There are some really f***ing stupid comments on here... People talking about these things they know absolutely NOTHING about. I wish everyone who has commented, that does NOT suffer from Anxiety and/or depression could choke and die.

The alcohol will catch up with you. Trust me on this one. Social anxiety will turn into anxiety/panic attacks. Been there, done that. If you're depressed, get on the Lexapro or something else. If you are just so tense you could crack walnuts between your asscheeks (like I was), get on Xanax. Find a good doctor, explain your symptoms and make him/her help you.

You're not covering it up well if you're drinking. You're just trading problems. Get some help - you want to be treated later for both social anxiety and alcoholism?

When I was young, I was terribly shy and very self conscious. At the age of 21, I found that drinking helped me to relax and be fun to be with. By 40, I realized that the alcohol had taken over and now I was just a ugly drunk. It would take a few more years of my life, before I had to isolate myself from the world. I still have my alcohol, But life couldn't be any lonelier. It's to late for me. Get help now.

So does my dad. (Or he did until he got older-- now he's just a pathetic alcoholic.) I almost went down that path too... but I'm glad I didn't. I don't ever want to hurt the people I love like he hurt me. (And I don't mean physically.)

Social Anxiety Disorder. Known to the rest of us as 'shyness'. I and many others suffer too, and it's based on self-loathing. You're no alone in that, it's just we don't have it tatoo'd on our foreheads. Fortunately!
