this is the host: I've heard this from others also. It was a decision that we've struggled with. The problem is there are so many people that like the comments. There is a flag option and if you dont like something or it is abusive you can flag it and we will take a look. Also there is no reason to ever look at the comments if you don't like to. Well some are funny and not really liberating secrets and the jokes that people make in the comments are really funny too. Like the person that smells their farts. My guess is they like the comments and like the person above you dont have to read the comments.

like the last person said, NOTHING is judgment-free. I took that choice when I came out of the closet with my being gay. I ask for comments on my secrets practicaly because I want to know what people would think if I actually let people KNOW my secret.

The comments are an incredible, instantaneous confirmation that you can say what you want, and you don't get physically shot at, slapped, or otherwise harmed. They make you think about what you believe, which in turns helps you mature, which is what many people NEED TO DO!!

To make everyone happy, maybe allowing comments should be optional for the OP. Let them decide whether or not they want their secret to be commented on. To the site owner - is this possible?

i completely agree with you. i'm starting to seriously dislike this site. people are being rude and nasty. it doesn't matter if you can report something, you don't need to have vulgar language to make someone feel hurt. i miss when there were no comments or voting thumbs up or down. i believe that people will judge either way, but i don't think that the secret tellers should have to know if people like it or not. i think if you want to vote on something, or tell your opinion of someone elses issues, make/write a blog. it's not about everyone elses opinion, it's about letting go of your secrets. i've been visiting postsecret more lately. this place makes me sad.

I'm the OP. I appreciate everyone's comments, yet I still feel that the site was more special when the viewer could simply use their imagination about the writer, and when - at least some of the posters - could feel like they were getting something off of their chests. Said people might worry about criticism in their daily life and might not have the willpower to avoid reading the comments section, only to have their worst scenario realized. I agree with the above poster who prefers PostSecret - its (yes)liberating because it is more dedicated to providing anonymity. Just my thoughts. And I won't read any more comments, so there!

From what I've seen, some OPs who write out of deep pain are often grateful for the comments. And then again, there are comments that are just plain hateful and/or stupid. Is it possible to allow an OP to determine whether or not s/he wants to enable comments?
