I moved from San Francisco to Missoula Montana and then from Missoula Montana to a small town in the far far far corner of northern california. I wouldn't take the change back for anything in the world.

The city is fine, its just harder to find enough people that share our ideas and back grounds any more. We are all so diverse and different now. Thats ok but harder to find common ground.

I want to as well. I feel you would get more satisfaction from growing your own food and depending on yourself, rather than getting sh*t on all day by customers, managers, the cable co, the phone co. ect. Besides no one seems to have any values anymore. Women and men are both avoiding actual relationships, opting instead for casual sex. Its ok in this society to treat aniamls and elderly as though they have no feelings, insuarance companies kill people that have been paying them their whole lives... screw this! If I don't work then I won't eat. Right now I work and don't have any money left anyway. Bye cruel world! I will be in the woods, hopefully the rotten people will all blow each other up.

The cowards who can't handle city life who think living in the woods is going to somehow exclude them from the changes taking place in society are sadly mistaken. You can run but you can't hide. It will find you, soon there won't be much woods left to hide in. You can't change things by living in a cave, be part of the solution. There's no such thing as off the grid.

I find it rather funny that these replies repeatedly mention proper spelling and grammar issues, particularly when many of the "happy hermits" replying here suggest reading instead of watching TV, sage advise at worst. People: As a society, our lack of attention to detail and the "who really cares" attitude we live by represent (at least in my eyes) a major portion of the downturn in our society today. If, as a whole, we would take more pride in ourselves and in our actions as previous generations have, we would not be satisfied to settle for less than ALL we are capable of spiritually, mentally, and physically. Instead, we're left with a population that is inundated with "stupid people" who comfortably shrug off responsibility for their own actions (or lack thereof). Sadly, this disturbing trend seems to grow thicker and thicker with each new generation. What can the future hold for a society such as this? But hey, "who really cares", right? Just spell the damn words folks! Americas founding fathers, many of whom could not read or write, recognized this weakness and built this country on a foundation that included massive emphases on education, strength in unity, and pride in manufacturing/buying within our own borders. Now, just over two hundred years later, some of our greatest American industries are being outsourced to other countries like China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, India... Why? It's because those countries saw our success in our early years, and emulated us. Now, as we fumble to hold onto our grand position on top, do you suppose those same countries might learn from our recent mistakes, and NOT follow us down the same downward spiral? Yes! Our only chance to compete at a global level is to re-emphasize education and self-pride! We have to live up to America's great image! Our country can only be as strong as we are ourselves.

AMEN to that brother..I have noticed the dumb people also, the woods would be nice. You would need to move way out from the city not the burbs I mean way out a couple of miles down an old dirt path, no roads. Buy a horse and get a dog. A woman would be nice but not necessary they bring alot of stupid and drama with them. Buy a good rifle and some ammo and kill your food. Tell the government to eat Sh@t! No new TAXES!!!

I'm more right brained instead of left. That is my fate. I choose to enjoy the fact that I cook very well, read, dance, garden, raise children, professional landscaper, into the arts and music and studying quantum physics and "Blue Gold". The worlds state of affairs saddens me. A want to become self sustaining and don't care about spelling any more. I'm 42 with no dept, I don't need much money now so I don't have to pay much in taxes either. I have my time left. I'm proud to be my back woods self. :)

I don't spell well either, but who really cares. I sold my home in the city a few years ago, moved to the country where a member of the family has 5 acras. Thay invited me to homestead. I put a small older, stripped out T.T. on a peice of land far from sight of anyone. Ran water lines and electric from there house to mine. Added a porch, later a 12' x 16' room. Aprox. 500 sq. ft. living space. I turned my desk top into wireless and with the help of a Canntana can, pick up internet from them, sharing half the bill.
I pay them 200.00 a month and do some of the keeping of the grounds. I pay no taxes, homeowners insurance or utilities. I couldn't be happier living the life of a hermit. I hate to think what kind of fix I would be in, had I stayed in the city with this Country in the shape that it's in today. I'm a 63 year old woman and managed to do all this by myself. So, if you really want to change your life, make your mind up to do it and just do it.

This is great dialogue here. We moved to the woods last year. We live off grid.Sold our house in the city and made are country cabin our heaven. With 8 solar panels and 16 batteries with just our dependence on propane for fridge and hot water, we are going in the direction of self reliance. We have foraged for mushrooms, made traps and are now building a greenhouse. We also learned there are over 10 containers needed for recycling. We got rid of our health insurance, mortgage, utility bills, etc. You will learn what is needed when you quiet the world a little and start reading books about the state of affairs these days. Here's to the thinkers and the doers and especially the risk takers that still have their heart and soul. :)

Living in the woods is great but if you are used to good food you better be a good cook because restaurants in the country are not anywhere near being on a par with any big city.
It's the one thing I miss the most after nine years in the woods. Forget about ethnic food, good pizza, variety, etc. Country Cooking is based largely on frozen foods and microwave ovens, the bane of any self-respecting connoisseur's existence. Weigh the benefits and drawbacks carefully. I treasure not having neighbors that I can see or having to make small talk with them when they have nothing to do but I truly miss being able to get a decent meal in a good restaurant or getting a good pizza once in a while.

The commies have done a fabulous job of dumbing down of America. They knew they could do it with out firing a single bullet. They just said give us your children and we did. Ask anyone under 40 who the Vice President of the US is but they know who Judge Judy is. We are living in sad times. We went to sleep.

Idiots are everywhere...its sad, I feel like I am drowning in stupidity, and I am afraid that eventually it will seep into my body as well. Living in the woods would be awesome, until someday you realize that even with the race as stupid as it is...you do need these stupid people to make you feel like you can contribute something of the intelligent variety to the world...such a travesty really...

You are a person too, and don't forget that other people think the same thing about you. You can focus on the stupidity of other people if you want to, but you can also chose to see the beauty in humanity. You want to go to the woods to get away from the dumbness of people, but the dumbness that you see is in your own judgement of others. That judgement is in yourself, and it will follow you wherever you go until you see it for what it is. If you isolate yourself, you will miss the wonders of the world, not just of people, and it will be a loss for everyone involved.

They have always been dumber than fence posts, en masse - you are just becoming more aware of them. If you have anything more than a room temperature IQ, you seem like a friggin' genius by comparison. There is nowhere to run to escape them. Just don't get caught in the groupthink and become one of the herd. Use your awareness to your advantage.

you are right, people are getting dumber everyday...I am not a walmart shopper, but once in a while I go there, it seems that my IQ goes down at least 10 points everytime I walk in there, the low brow shoppers there are some of the dumbest ilk I have ever seen...do not know how to add, or how much money they have to pay for things....it is heartbreaking how dumb this tv society has become from even the 70's

Most people who inhabit cities are insufferable liberals. They make life difficult to enjoy because they spend almost all of their time trying to impose their lifestyles and beliefs on everyone else. They think they have
ALL the answers. Get out while there's still time to enjoy life!

I am basically off the grid, and I don’t think that life is much better. I still have to deal with dumb shit all day long, mostly the local government telling what I can and can’t do. Pulse, I'm poor. Trust me, you can’t be simple again, the world is too small now.

Err... it's not really hard to do guys. Unless you're trying to be out in the woods with internet and central air. If you're really willing to live the hermit life, though, it is not hard to get food; all kinds of forage is available in nature and it's easy to catch small game with snares and traps. And it wouldn't be hard to sell hides or meat in a lot of places if you wanted to get ammunition for a rifle. If you're willing to go somewhere really wild (like alaska) then being a hermit isn't too complicated. Not easy, but simple.

I lived in a mid sized city for years. The stupidity epidemic got to be too much for me as well, and over the course of about two months I ended up getting f***ed over really horribly by people that were supposed to have been VERY close to me. So now, I am a hermit. The best kind to! The kind with internet and climate control. I just took a job living and working on a ranch. Been here about 7 months and I will NEVER go back. I love it! No "friends" no "lovers" no betrayal. Horses don't hate. Anyway, my point is that it may not be what you're looking for but it certainly cuts you off from the epidemic, so you may want to look into this kind of work.

I agree with you, I have been thinking about this for a long time also. A lot of people are becoming dumber and more ignorant everyday. I'm going to buy a nice amount of land, in an area in the middle of nowhere, that will not be hit by land developers in my lifetime. I'm going to build my house right in the middle of my land so no one can build a house right next to me.
