Most alien species are so unlike us, it's hard to have any meaningful communication. I'm not even sure how you would apply the terms "advanced" unless it's defined in very narrow terms (e.g. They can do biochemical manipulation we can't do. A spore doesn't look like advanced technology, but we sure can't make one.)

Lol, I have thought the same thing. What if we are advanced and aliens are dumbasses. I guess we imagine that because if we think they cone here they must have advanced transportation. I think at least one alien civilization probably is far, far more advanced. Say a civilization is a million, or even a billion years ahead of us, they will see our intelligence as the equivalant to us as we see the intelligence of worker ants, or bacteria.
