Why does everyone love him? Either he is doing a good job, or he knows how to play office politics. Either way, if he ever gets promoted, he may pull you up with him. Unless, of course, you are the owner of the business. If that is the case-I don't think it is-then you should fire him.

I'd guess the OP's problem is that really the guy is a jerk and is now taking advantage of his new plum situation. And the OP is pissed. Can't blame you, OP, if I've got that right. Don't worry, it'll catch up to him. ;)

Kinda in the same situation. Got an unemployed friend a great job with me. Put my butt on the line for him. Now regretting it.

I've done that twice - helped people get jobs, and they started out great, but slid downhill to where the one was nothing more than dead weight, and the other was worse - drank on the job, stole tools, didn't show up for work. It was a civil service job so real hard to fire the guy. He finally moved to another state.

Guess that'll make you more discerning of character in the future.

Situations like this is like marriage. You don't know what you have until you live together.

NEVER recommend someone for a job, it only ends badly.

I think the OP is upset that everyone loves the guy, and they must, because nobody says boo about him being late.

He has taken advantage of the situation and is not thankful at all. NEVER NEVER reccomend a friend and/or family member for a job-it NEVER works. And FYI..he has been counseled and turned down for a raise...blame it on weak management I guess.
