I have been sleeping on my couch for two years now because I kept waking up suffocating in my bed. It hasn't happened since then, but I'm still afraid.

Probably sleep apnea.

I had a couch that when I feel asleep on it I had the most horrible nightmares. I left it behind when I moved.

Get yourself checked out for sleep apnea (which I have). It's likely you sleep on your side on the couch, but on your back on the bed (perhaps after rolling over in your sleep). Sleeping on your side can be helpful, but will not cure it. Even if this is not accurate, see a sleep therapist - they can change your life, and have done so for both me and my father. Good luck.

I would guess this person may be over-weight. The additional body mass can promote difficulty breathing when asleep.
