I lost my father at a young age and my mother said the hardest part was a few months after it happened everything went quiet. There was no more sorrys no funeral arrangements to do. Everyone had stopped coming over. This is when you need to give your support when everyone else has moved on to the next thing.

What do you say? You tell her. What happens next can't be changed by you scripting a couple lines.

Seriously you need to stay with her. No matter how strong she may seem, consider it a 24/7 suicide watch. That would be my only thought if i was in her shoes.

Well the least you can do is help look for them. The longer they are lost , the harder it will be to find them.

what this gut said..........Be honest, tell her you don't know what to say and can't imagine the loss she's feeling. just let her know you are there if/when she needs you and yes bring her food.

This is so very sad. It is most everyones worst nightmare. Be there for the person who lost this family. This would be unbearable so they will need help. Hang in there and be there ...... they will need you.

How about "I'm sorry for driving drunk with a 0.21% BAC. I'm sorry that I plowed into your family's vehicle head-on, killing them but leaving me with only a scratch. I'm sorry that I hit and ran and the police didn't catch me. I'm not sorry that I got away with it".

I lost my mother to a drunk driver seven months ago...and I absolutely hate hearing people say they are sorry. Maybe try..."I'm so sad for you, and I'm here if you need me".

If a phone call feels too much for you, a small gift of potted flowers with a short note explaining your feelings would be nice. No cut flowers. They always reminded me of death, whereas anything that can live on and grow helped me feel better. And pray, if you are the praying type, that she may receive peace.

Some people are narrowminded. Please, just call. Say your sorry. It's all you can do. Nothing will help. But believe me, later on, she will remember your kindness, no matter if you knew what to say or not.

*thank you for all the kind words and prayers. she is still in intensive care and only immediate family is allowed to visit but she is able to receive phone calls. every time i reach for the phone i feel my throat close up and i start to cry.....the whole situation is so tragic i don't even know where to begin.

as weird as it may sound, she is lucky that she is in the hospital. If know one has told her yet she can be told by a loved one, and immediately a mental health professional can take over. She will be around people and have no way to take her own life for now. Once she gets out of the hospital the psy/dr will have a recommendation of what to do next according to her behavior and state of mind. Just to share now my personal idea of what I would do, such devastation would completely take away EVERY SINGLE PERSON I have in my life..in fact I have KNOW ONE else. Hopefully she has a different type of social/family life. Anyhow, I would no doubt end my life, and do it with as much dignity and as peaceful as I could(probably pills) I hope things will turn out more positive for her. such devistation. makes me ill to think of it. good luck to you.
