Yeah while incest isn't a good idea as a common practice, it doesn't really increase the instance of genetic defects unless you're talking about immediate family. Some say that in first cousins it can do the same, but most studies show that its either very rare or not statistically significant.
For instance, the European nobility picked up quite a few genetic defects based on their institutionalized program of interbreeding. But that's generation after generation of it, not just single instances. So, cousin lovin's not really accepted, but then is also not going to guarantee any problems at all.
Oh, and grats to you for keeping the baby. Specially if it WAS a case of rape, you're a good woman. Most people tend to just discard such babies as inconveniences, only considering their own rights and not those of the babe. You're child will know you love him even more for it if you ever tell him the skinny.

The poster prior to me is correct. The level for genetic defects isn't increased all that much. Repeatedly practicing within the same gene pool can eventually increase the chance for defects/retardation significantly.

I had a sexual relationship with my cousin, starting when we were 22 and 21 respectively. It continued for 20 months, and we even moved in together for the last 15 months.
Both our families knew, and as we were both Mennonite, there wasn't any huge taboo within the family, as we both had relatives who got married and were cousins.
What broke us up was the reaction some of her friends when they found out. In the end, we couldn't agree on a city to live in (I was in Vancouver and she in Winnipeg). She married someone else, and they had three kids together. Her husband and my wife of ten years knew all this. My cousin got divorced last year, and her youngest is 17 and plans to move out later this year to go to school in Toronto. I plan on visiting her sometime after that.

Ok, for anyone giving this woman grief, saying it's messed up, or that incest is wrong, or that she is nasty and is going to rot in hell, give her a break. None of us know what the circumstances are. It could've been that she and her cousin were really high or drunk at the time and they regret the huge mistake they made. And, as many of us like to think, we are not immune to pregnancy just because it was 1 instance of unprotected sex. And, why would anyone knock her for keeping the baby. It's her own beliefs/morals. If she felt abortion was wrong, then that's her decision. I feel, it's a persons body, they can make whatever decision they want to make. Abortion in neither right nor wrong. And, finally, if you are very religious and take the Bible seriously, then, in theory, we're all a product of incest. The Bible states that Adam and Eve were the 1st man and woman. It states that they had 3 sons, Cain, Abel, and Seth, as well as other sons and daughters. So, in theory, the human population has grown to what it is now from the interbreding between Adam and Eve's sons and daughters. Who knows, Cain, Abel, and Seth may have even been doing their mother.
