I have a high functioning autistic child too and love every fiber of his being!! Autism is part of who he is, it doesn't define him. We need to keep in mind that we are caring for a child with autism-not autism in a child. He will grow, prosper, keep hoping and achieving.... And no, every kid with autism isn't Rainman, and every kid with austism doesn't cuss and get away with everything-it depends on the child AND the parents!! Good for you!

Many people without "evident" disabilities NEED a cure more than anyone with Autism.

Cure? Just stop vaccinating them!

(Original poster) My son is high functioning...space didn't allow me to include that. I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to have lower functioning child. I haven't always felt this way. I spent several years depressed and sleeping to avoid having to deal with the issues in my life (and his). I'm just very, very happy that I finally woke up. I'm not judging what anyone feels about their child's Autism. Just simply saying that for me I can't even imagine ever "curing" him. We talk about Autism openly in our house. I've talked specifically about it with him but he's still too young to really comprehend it. I'll let him watch Rain Man. I'll also let him watch Temple Grandin (HBO) and Adam. I'm raising him to be a self sufficient, self advocating, proud man--despite his challenges. He will overcome them and find his place in this world. I'm sure of it.

I work with lower functioning autistic kids, and it breaks my heart every day that they will never be able to go home because their families either can't handle them or their not fit to handle them. God bless you for taking care of his special child yourself and not letting other people raise your child.

I'll never forget the blind, mentally challenged kid I saw on TV who could play any music he heard, by ear, on the piano, after listening to it once. It amazed the hell out of me. I couldn't do that if I wanted to.

You are an awesome parent. I am inspired by your love and courage to ignore the BS system that says autism is an abnormality!Screw the damn meds and BS diagnosis! Screw the cure! We are not dysfunctions... we are people!!!!
