My grandmother (in her 40's) jumped off a bridge and killed herself. I'm approaching my 40's and I'm afraid I might lose it as well.

my Father put a bullet into his own head after surviving Vietnam, my best friend did the same over a woman. I have thought that I should do the same and join them, almost every time the going has gotten too rough to handle, but I was meant for better things, aren't you?

Don't do it. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

I have often felt strongly about doing the same. According to some reputable websites, I should be locked up, but for some wierd reason, I couldn't bring myself to do anything about it even when I knew exactly when and how. Well, time has passed, I'm divorced with a new job and new friends...a COMPLETE overhaul of my life. I'm experiencing all new things in life and now I no longer feel like that anymore. Try making dramatic changes and throw yourself into the complete unknown...you'll find yourself in a much newer and happier place every time. I promise.
