i met my wife this way. she was best friends with my ex. My ex (all subject to opinion) was not that great a person, when she used to complain about me and how annoying me being so sweet to her was, etc,,etc,,, my now wife would just cringe....when we would all three hang out i got along great with my now wife. eventually it turned into more. i got out of the previous relationship as smoothly as i could, but you know how that is, it's nev er a perfect breakup, escpecially when you've fallen for someone else, that is better for you.
