It's probably a security thing. Emotional, not physical. Kind of like hoarding...you feel you have to have a back up plan. Its not such a bad thing.

I hide cash in my books. If the house burns down, my thick books will be fine. Also, criminals don't open books, it's their Kriptonite! I have thousands stashed in ancient philosophy second-hand tomes...
