Well, they're desgined to sell, and to make us more complicit consumers. Even the programming itself extols virtues compatible with supercapitalism--insecurity, lust, fear, betrayal...all these things ultimately drive us straight to market, be it the mall, porn Web sites, big boxes, pharmacies, etc. The smarter they get, the stupider we become!

I am 23, and all my friends and co-workers believe I am a snob because I feel television literally rots your brain.
The revolution will NOT be televised.

Right...because AMERICANS are the only ones who watch TV in the entire world. You know, there's this thing called the internet that does the same thing as TVs. You don't seem to have a problem with that...

Oh I get it... so you traded in your television addiction for a computer/internet addiction. And then you come here and proclaim your superiority...
Do us all a favor and start watching television again.

My son and I watch the history channel and a host of other channels in that area also. I guess you could read about it but the experience of watching it together and discussing it are well worth the money i pay per month. Oh yeah and i do watch stupid stuff like I love New York and celebrity rehab.

Why do you think they call TV the "boob tube"? Music can have the same effects. Reading makes you bright. Ever read a book, then go watch the movie? Point made...

The internet seems to be for far more simplistic people than television ever was. Where else can you read stupid conspiracy theories and secrets from random strangers?
I'm pretty sure you just called the kettle black, Mr. Pot.

do you understand the concept behind sitcoms. they are not meant to be taken seriously. there are a few good ones. quite witty writting. but i guess you have to have a sence of humor. in fact some of the wittiest writting can be found in adult animation like South Park, King of The Hill and Family Guy. we all need a break and good laugh every now and then.

You are absolutely right! Most of it seems to be aimed at drooling idiots! There is nothing interesting there except for a very few shows, which last about 10 minutes. The other 20 minutes are commercials.

I could not go to that extreme. I still like to watch the news and PBS. I refuse to buy into paid TV. I have no idea when people talk about all these shows they watch. I don't understand how people can schedule their lives around it. I feel guilty for my loss of knowledge by wasting time away on the internet.

^2 up, I'm sick of you spell checking everyone! You fail! The purpose of this site is not to be graded... but to share experiences. So you fail for not understanding the assignment... teach that!

I have not participated in network broadcasting in 11 years. I have a TV and over 300 movies, including a few sitcom's on DVD. I agree with the OP - turn off your boob tube and read a book, play with your kids, have a conversation with your spouse -oh wait, then you might have to USE your brains, nevermind.

Have not had a television in my house since 1989. 24yrs. When at friends houses, watch a little TV and in five minutes ready to do something else. Can't stand it. I built a boat a few years ago, a friend asked how I found the time. Told him it took me less time than he spent watching TV. Ouch!!

I canned my tv when I divorced my ex 8 years ago. It was the two best decisions in a long time. One thing I noticed is how stupid tv really is when you are not engaged in it everyday. I also love the silence in the house from time to time just to enjoy the conversations I have with myself
