he has in his possesion a soldiers paybook ,as he has called it several times, his pictiue I.D. is quite clear,his rank,serial number,i guess they called it that, in the german army,my aunt has told me this is a dark secret our family has lived with for years, he has on occasion told me the things they were ordered to carry out,he is very neat in apearance and keeps himself well groomed for an old man,i havent tryed to verify this because i dont want to attract attention to him,

People are so quick to judge. I had many family members in this particular war as well... Hell, my Great Grandmother had the numbers tattooed on her arm. It was a different time back then... What makes you think he jumped at the chance to do these things? What makes you think he isn't remorseful? A lot of the Nazi soldiers hated what they were doing, but were terrified to go against Hitler. Going against orders is a hard and dangerous thing. It was horrible, but unless he spends his current life as a white supremacist, let the poor guy move on from his past.

My family is from Germany. My Grandfather was a "Nazi" in name but was part of the resistance. He saved HUNDREDS of Jews by changing their official documents to buy them time to escape. When he died the church was overflowing with these people who had lived because of him. Sorry OP...but they DID have a choice between RIGHT and WRONG. What he did was the core of his character. Sure he was good to you. Hitler was good to his German Shepard and Eva Braun. That didnt stop him from MUDERING MILLIONS. This man you care for is still a murderer. Just a well dressed one.

The way I see it is he was a soldier who followed orders or be killed. Now if he where a high ranking officer who ordered the executions..he must stand trial. He has led a good life after this horrendous war and caused no trouble..so let sleeping dogs lie.

My father was a MP during WW@ and when the Nazi concentration camps were liberated they often allowed the prisoners to kill the guards. They even gave them guns to do it. Things happen during wartime.
Your Uncle didn't kill Jews or other non Germans. He killed other germans and even if he gets caught he may not be punished.

Thanks for the post. Generated good responses. I am a Jew. My grandpa fought under Patton. If he is a good a man as he sounds, you have nothing to be ashamed of. His past is over, he was caught up in the stream of popular ideas and was swept away. He was brainwashed as I believe most of that country was. My family will not perpetuate the hate for the next generation.

Our soldiers are KILLING in Iraq - there is no difference. Just another solider doing a job that the higher up are telling them to do.

Not all German soldiers were Nazis, most were not. Does his id indicate "ss" or "waffen ss?" He may have only been part of the Wehrmacht, and not the SS. Has he told you that he executed people personally? Unless his name is registered with the multinational database of Nazi war criminals, he is probably not considered a Nazi war criminal. Don't jump to conclusions, talk to him, gain his trust, and then follow your best judgement. If he confesses, or he was in the SS, you must turn him in.
