I wish you'd just at least ONCE, say you're proud of me and how far I've come after such a tough past. But nothing is never enough for you! What else can I do?

Accept yourself, you don't need anyone elses approval.

This is true. If the one who seems to not see how far you have come, accept that they did not grow up under circumstances similar to yours and can't appreciate your journey. Also see that this person probably has an internal voice that is so harsh on themselves they can't see beyond the standards they are holding for themselves. I am proud of you. Not knowing your struggles or path you have come from. There are others in your life who also know you and admire your journey. It may be time to reach back to someone coming from a background like yours to offer the encouragement you needed and need so very much.

I'm the same way w/ my Dad. I quit the job I love to help him with his business and thought I'd get a "Thanks Son." 3 yrs. later...nadda. SO I said, "Screw it" and I started dating an extremist muslim. He's hardcore republican :)

Although I agree that you shouldn't try to please other people, I think you should also ask yourself where would you be if they had been satisfied a long time ago. I would guess not as far as you are now. Sometimes we just have to look at the bright side of things even when it seems all dark. I have the same situation with my parents and it consumed me, but I learned to think about it differently.

perhaps they are incapable of giving you what you need, even if they want to, so why continue the quest?

Distance yourself. Trying harder will make you better yourself as these other people have said, but it starts to wear you out when you never get the acceptance or approval you seek. So, after a point, it will cause you to give up and be a bum like all those around you, forget it. They are not capable and thats not your fault!
