Such a sad and beautiful statement. The fragility of life is lost on most but not and not me. Agony yes but a real gift in the bigger picture.

I say tell them the truth. Why should you protect a bastard who hurt you? I wouldn't! The truth is the truth, they will have to just deal with it........

He/she did you a big favor by their suicide. After a 20-year marriage to someone who not only hit me, but also did everything else he could think of to hurt me, sexually abused one of my children (and countless others), and then wound up getting all of our assets in the divorce (he controlled check book -- I did not even have money to hire an attorney; had to beg for representation), you should count your lucky stars and consider this person's death a gift from God. Whether or not you tell his family he/she hit you is irrelevant. Enjoy your freedom and MOVE ON!

His/Her death will haunt you until you deal with it. Suicide's are cowards.. who leave us all hurt and confused. Seek professional help who will allow you to leave this person behind.
