I remember that feeling myself years ago (and I'm the dad). Sometimes I still get that feeling, that now my purpose in life is diminished... However something tells me that would hurt them, change them, very badly. We all need to try to hang in there. I wish there was a place we could all meet and talk, but I live in a stupid part of the US.
