Probably because dogs have little or no free will and are still happy and loving. You don't have to trust them. People, on the other hand, are so much more difficult...they could do anything at any moment. Plus, you could give them the world and they could still be unhappy. Unpredictability is much harder to trust; it takes a strong person.

I've lived a good life, great family, parents, children. Lost my mother, a couple of best friends, but the loss of the dog I loved most? I got the word at work, and broke down and sobbed right there. There is nothing life the pure selfless love of a great dog.

lock the dog and the wife in the trunk of your car for an hour and see which one is happy to see you open it.

Because dogs are better than people. They will always love you, even if you aren't a good person you can come home to Sparky and he'll wag that tale and think you the greatest.
Even Hitler's dog loved him. That's how great and loyal dogs are.
