This is fairly common -- though of course that doesn't make it right. Did the trusted authority figure threaten your life if you told on him? Mine did. Sadly, when I returned to my hometown years later with a gun (and yes, my dumb a** Lib friends, I do happen to carry a permit), he was nowhere to be found: having died in a car crash years earlier. Shucks, it would've been fun planting one up his rectum.

It happened to me when I had just turned 16. I remember it like it was yesterday. I've beat him up, my dad beat him up another time, but you know what... it didn't change my anger and hurt. Fighting him didn't make me feel better because every time I think about it, I cry. I don't know where that man is today, but I do know that I'm still alive, have a marriage and baby, and that man does not have any power and can't do it to me again. That's your strength: The violence happened, but that person can't get you or harm you now. This battle is now in your mind, so you have to always remind yourself that YOU HAVE THE RIGHT to protect your body and mind now.
