I am deaf in one ear also and constantly get looks from people who think I am ignoring them or just being ignorant. Hearing aids wont help my situation but I wish everyday that they could. What an awful handicap it is. When I was 20 I turned down a lifetime of full disability because I didnt feel handicapped, now I wish I could have been more open minded about it. I hardly ever tell anyone because I feel like I have something to be ashamed about. People can be so cruel sometimes.

I've got the same problem as you, and I know it sucks! Your always sitting with your good ear towards the group, so you can't really sit by the people you want to. And driving in the car is a nightmare if you have people in the back. I've been deaf in my right ear since birth, due to a disease called hemifacial microsomnia, which caused other birth defects as well. I truly feel for you.

I am 27 years old and I have been deaf in my left ear and only have 50% left in my right ear since I was 2 yrs old. I have had all medical tests to find out why and never could. I have applied for SSI and got denied every time. The reason is that I have coped with this for my life and now it has gotten to the point where no one can tell that I am mostly deaf. I have tried hearing aids but they don't work. I am a Paramedic and can do my job fine but now I have noticed that my hearing is getting worse and im afraid that I will lose it all together and still be denied for SSI.

I finally got hearing aids and they changed everything. They are expensive (the good ones) and it's a pain sometimes, but it really helps.
