You take guns from law abiding citizens and all you have left is criminals with guns and law abiding citizens have no way to defend themselves. I always took the 2nd amendment to mean the right to bear arms must exist alongside a well-regulated militia. Of course, it was the 1700s when this document was written (so how practically relevant can it be), and political inertia is not something the founders wrote of in the federalist papers.
