It is illegal to let people die when you are a paramedic if you are able to do something about it. That helps to protect the "stupid" people from their stupid actions if the medic decides to not act there is a legal consequence.

I'm not a paramedic, but I showed up before them at one scene to find a guy in the throws of a hash buzz thinking he was having a heart attack. The gurney guys laughed. Apparently paramedics get a kick out of calls where no one is burned to death or needing to be scraped off the road. Who'd have thought?
